Villanelle for Kirsten
Jack Butler

We practice till we quiet all our fear.
The stillness knows us, takes us for its own.
The light we share is warm and full and clear.

Yogananda, Mozart, and Shakespeare
knew grief, despair, that gnawing at the bone.
We practice till we quiet all our fear.

We breathe until the tremors disappear.
In solitude, we know we aren’t alone.
The light we share is warm and full and clear

at sunrise and sunset.  What we hold dear
is all around us, ready to be known.
We practice till we quiet all our fear.

Why quarrel with the ragged spirits here,
the masters of this dark, disastrous zone?
The light we share is warm and full and clear.

What can we lose but our illusions?  We’re
in service to the infinite, the one.
We practice till we quiet all our fear.
The light we share is warm and full and clear.
