The Plum Trees
Jon Ballard

I say, "The plum trees are blossoming,"
Aware of having never used such a phrase
In January with any seriousness, but this
Is Mexico. And I notice that a general browning
Of the landscape doesn't deny the apple tree
Its prodigious, violet blooms. I'm warm
In the midday sun-comfortably warm-
The way I imagine Adam must have been
On his curtailed tour of Eden, long
Before Eve could be heard lamenting,
"The plum trees are bare and dying."
