39 Miles to Tupelo
Miranda Merklein

Golden rod sprawls
in ponds across the prairie,

shadows of the sun's afternoon
kite. The road sign, Egypt,

marks a farmland of grain,
wafts of dark soil and shaved

grass. A market sells
home-made pies,

fried Pies
and fried green tomatoes.

The cows in the nearby pasture
look the same as anywhere else.
