a stream moves
silty snowmelt
down a talus slope—
moves though hardly moves
mossy rocks half submerged
in deep trout pools sunlight flickers
sink.

the mind too is stream-like—
a streamy thing that starts and stops
shallows out to riffles
gathers in cut bank pools and ends

in Sinks Canyon
the water disappeared through
limestone caves, emerging a mile down-
stream colder and darker
and fat trout two feet long at least feeding there
yet I ignored the trout breaking surface—
and stepping into sunlight felt an urge to sneeze.
