Moonshiners and Mooncussers
Erin Ganaway
Surefooted woodsman,
he scuffs a path
of leavened leaves
knifed pine bark disguised
as the scrapes of a rutting buck:
landmarks closeted beyond wool valance
daybreaks
eastern rattlesnake dances
he prays until his lightning comes home

Ambling beachcomber,
he knuckles a lantern
palms a beat in the fog
casts hazy illusions
out to the gale force sea:
ships heeling beyond alkaline
midnight
 salt spray grazes
he hovers until his silver comes home

harvest moon
drips fourteen karat
leaks the origins of a soul
hack-sawed down the middle:
serrated edges aiming to meet
in the unbridled light of
heritage sourced
